Early stage detection of cancer is vital...
India's cancer incidence is far lower than developed nations, yet death rates are higher. This is because almost 50% of cancers are detected at late stages in India due to lack of awareness, illiteracy, fear and taboos. If treatment begins at an advanced stage, costs are very high and survival chances are also low. Therefore, the need of the hour is better awareness that will spur people to go in for cancer screening.
Some of the warning signs of cancer onset are (a) Change in bowel or bladder habits (b) A sore that does not heal (c) Unusual bleeding or discharge (d) Thickening or lump on breast or elsewhere (e) Indigestion or difficulty in swallowing (f) Obvious change in wart or mole and (g) Nagging cough or hoarseness.
An important aspect is to spread awareness about preventable causes. Experts believe that In India, preventable factors account for 70% of cancers out of which 40% are tobacco-related, 20% infection-related and balance10% are due to other factors. Maximum deaths occur on account of oral, lung, breast, cervical, head and neck cancers.
Checking for breast cancer at home...
Women are advised to undertake self-breast test regularly at home, 7 days before and after periods. Stand in front of a mirror with your arms relaxed and look for any change in size, shape and position of the breasts. Look for skin changes, skin discolouration and sores. Check nipples for peeling, change in direction & size, whether retracted and whether there is any discharge. With your fingers apply firm pressure on each breast in a circular pattern moving from the outside to the centre to check the entire breast and armpit for any lump, thickening or hardened knot. Place your thumb and forefinger on the tissue surrounding each nipple and with firm pressure look for lumps.
