Needy patients have to relocate to cities for cancer treatment...
Most of the poor cancer patients who hail from villages and small towns need to travel to cities where Tata Memorial Centre's hospitals, Regional Cancer Centres and other cancer hospitals are based. Fortunately, many of these hospitals provide free or affordable treatment to underprivileged cancer patients and their caregivers.
Such patients also seek to avail benefit of Government schemes and financial assistance from NGOs. Based on the type and stage of cancer, certain number of patients need hospitalization, whereas other patients may simply require regular visits to hospital for chemotherapy and/or radiation. Such patients would have to stay in the city where the hospital is based.
Accommodation is provided for free or at nominal charges...
However, the costly accommodation charges in major cities are unaffordable to the patients and accompanying care-takers, many of whom belong to the 'below the poverty line' category. There have been instances of patients discontinuing treatment and returning to their native places, due to lack of cheap lodging options.
To redress this problem, hospitals, NGOs and charitable organisations are now providing accommodation as listed in the section below. The service is available free-of-cost or at nominal charges to poor cancer patients and accompanying family members. As the treatment for cancer is a lengthy process, people are allowed to stay as long as required. In many such homes, either food is provided or cooking facility exists. Transport facilities are made available from the care centre to hospital and back, so that patients can attend chemotherapy sessions at the hospital and return.
