Poor & needy require subsidised medicines, prosthesis & wigs...
During treatment in hospital as well as subsequently, cancer patients may need assistance in supply of medicines, wigs, prosthesis and so on. As a rule, cancer drugs are expensive but generic versions of the drugs have eased the burden somewhat. However, patent-protected drugs produced by multinationals continue to be costly. Underprivileged patients in particular are unable to buy such expensive drugs and continue treatment.
Hair loss occurs during chemotherapy and for female patients this is a traumatic experience. Their self-esteem suffers at a time when they need to maintain high morale to combat cancer.
Subsequent to breast surgery, women survivors find that mastectomy bras and prosthesis help regain self-confidence and feelings of femininity. Survivors of other types of cancers need artificial limbs, colostomy bags, artificial voice box etc.
NGOs and organisations provide these requisites in many cities...
Multinational drug companies like Pfizer and Roche have programmes vide which their cancer medicines are provided free of cost or at subsidized rates to eligible patients. Reputed wig makers obtain hair donations from concerned citizens and wigs made from donated hair are supplied to needy cancer patients either for free or at low prices. NGOs and charitable organisations distribute prosthesis and bra supports to women who have undergone mastectomy.
