Poor and needy patients require affordable treatment...
Poor and middle class Indians continue to depend on 'Out of Pocket Expenses'(OOPE) to meet their cancer treatment expenses. Studies indicate that as many as two-thirds of Indians cover their health expenses through OOPE. Financial aid by NGOs, Government schemes, accommodation and food assistance do help to some extent.
Figures tell the story: The cost could range from Rs 2.5 lakh for six months of treatment with some of the lowest priced generic drugs in the world, to Rs 20 lakh with novel drugs and targeted medicines. Compounding the problem is the fact that most often cancer is detected late or the screening is not proper or the treatment is not right the first time. Each of these factors cause the treatment cost to rise manifold.
Free or subsidised treatment is provided to the needy…
Leading the way is the most reputed cancer hospital group in India, Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) which has hospitals in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Guwahati, Sangrur, Varanasi and Visakhapatnam. TMC hospitals treat almost 70% of their patients for free or at nominal charges. TMH, Mumbai which has 700 beds, treats over 65,000 new cancer patients from across the country every year. It also attends to 4.5 lakh follow-up cases.
Then there are the 27 Regional Cancer Centres (RCCs) set up by Central Government jointly with State Governments. These as well as hospitals exclusively run by State Governments offer free treatment for the disadvantaged and at affordable rates for others. Private hospitals run by trusts and foundations also provide treatment at affordable prices.
