Genetic mutations can cause cancer…
A gene mutation is a permanent alteration in the DNA sequence that makes up the gene. The altered DNA sequence differs from the DNA sequence found in most people. Gene mutations are of kind kinds: Germline or hereditary mutations and acquired mutations.
Germline or hereditary mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes increase the risk of developing some cancers. Women are at risk for breast or ovarian cancers and men are at risk for prostrate or breast cancers. Also, among both genders there is an increased risk of pancreatic cancer and skin cancer.
If you have a family history of cancer…
Everyone above the age of 40 years should undergo annual screening for cancer. However, if you have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, you can consider a germline genetic test (on a blood or saliva sample) to see if you are carrying a gene mutation that increases the risk. Family history would mean incidence of breast or ovarian cancer at a young age in two or more close relatives, such as parents or siblings or children.
If you wish to consider genomic assessment, please approach the lab concerned directly or through a hospital. A special kit is sent to you, through which you need to courier a blood sample back to them. The sample is analysed by gene-mapping equipment and a personalised report is mailed back to you. Should the test detect an inherited mutation, you can take steps to lower the cancer risk.
