Cancer diagnosis is a distressing and traumatic experience...

The moment a person hears that he or she has cancer, the world seems to come crashing down. Equally, it is an emotionally distressing experience to the family members and other loved ones. Everyone’s life turns topsy-turvy and it gets hard to cope with normal living. Life becomes gloomy, depressing and overwhelming. In addition, the side-effects of treatment such as pain, hair loss, loss of appetite and fatigue adversely impact the already fragile mental state of the patient.

Counsellors provide emotional support and motivation…

It is well known that a positive outlook and a strong belief in cure, greatly helps in battling cancer. Counsellors as well as support groups motivate patients on winning the battle. They actively listen to the concerns of the patients and provide guidance and helpful suggestions. They offer hope and emotional support. It helps that often the counsellors are cancer survivors who have travelled on the same road as the presently afflicted.

Counsellors also advise patients on supplementary measures which help in fighting cancer more efficiently. These measures include yoga therapy, nutrition guidance, meditation, dance therapy etc. Subsequent to remission or cure and discharge from hospital, focus of counsellors shifts to improving the quality of life of the survivors. This involves rehabilitation and proper transition to normal life.
